Memsource 2019: Our Top Feature Picks

Memsource New Features

2019 is almost a wrap and as we approach the end of the year, it’s time to look back at all the new things that have been added to Memsource in the last 12 months. This year, over 29 billion words were processed in Memsource - that’s the equivalent of around 58 million A4 pages. Let’s take a look at some of this year’s most exciting feature releases and updates that contributed to this staggering number, and take a sneak peek at what’s to come in 2020.

Unlocking the Full Potential of Machine Translation

The most notable new feature of 2019 was Memsource Translate. We discovered that in 70% of translation projects, a more effective machine translation (MT) engine could be used. We set about finding a way to solve the issue of MT selection and help users unlock the full potential of machine translation. Enter Memsource Translate, which automatically selects the best-performing machine translation engine for your project. Not only that, it includes our AI-powered Machine Translation Quality Estimation (MTQE) feature, which identifies high-quality MT suggestions to improve post-editing efficiency. MTQE also received an update this year and the new version assigns quality scores to raw MT output in up to four times more segments than before. This is just the beginning of the MT-focused features we have planned.

While we are on the topic of machine translation, we developed integrations with more MT engines, including Yandex and T400, bringing the total number of supported engines to 33.

Making Translation Fully Mobile

Memsource Mobile received a considerable update in August this year with the release of Memsource Mobile 3.0 which includes the first-ever comprehensive mobile CAT tool. The addition of a mobile CAT tool has taken the app from a basic project management tool to a platform that complements the whole translation workflow. Project managers can create projects and jobs with templates, term bases, and translation memories, and stay updated with instant notifications and dashboards, while linguists have more freedom to accept, decline, translate, and manage jobs from anywhere, ensuring quick communication and accessibility.

Improving Quality Control

Memsource offers a wide range of quality assurance checks and this year we introduced a new QA feature, Instant QA, which allows you to run QA checks after every segment. As well as reducing the number of QA warnings at the end of a job, this feature improves the quality of segments saved into the translation memory and improves collaboration between linguists. What’s more, you don’t even have to click anywhere to run Instant QA. The QA check happens automatically as you confirm each segment. Linguists can decide if they want to use Instant QA for their job or not, unless the PMs enforce the use of the Instant QA, which is recommended when multiple linguists are working on a single project. Providing Even More Context

When it comes to translating, the more context you can provide, the better. It shapes the meaning and understanding of a text. To give translators a clear picture of what they are translating, the Memsource Editor is equipped with a real-time preview allowing you to see the visual context of the translation, instantaneously. In Memsource, you can preview 13 different file types, including Microsoft Word, HTML, and Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This year we added in-context preview for Adobe InDesign files and, most recently, Adobe Experience Manager (AEM). Another feature giving translators more context is plural forms which we now support for PO files (more formats will soon follow). Each language has its own grammatical forms for singular and plural phrases which presents a challenge for localization. In the Memsource Editor, plural-sensitive strings are shown in all their forms in separate segments, based on the target language plural rules, ensuring more accurate translation.

Continuous Localization

Ensuring that your different technology platforms work together seamlessly is critical for a global company to function efficiently and for this, you need integrations. Memsource has an extensive list of connectors and plugins that enable continuous localization between Memsource and a variety of content management systems, online repositories, and marketing automation platforms. New to the Memsource integration family this year are connectors for Contentful, ContentStack, Typo3, and Joomla, plugins for AEM 6.3 and 6.4, and improvements to several existing connectors such as Hubspot, Sitecore, and Marketo.

We Want Your Feedback

We continuously strive to make Memsource a better product for you. To do this, we need you to tell us what you think. This year we added a rating tool to Memsource where you can give the platform a score out of 10, tell us what we do best, and what we can do better. Thank you to those of you who have already sent in your feedback. If you haven’t yet, you can find it by logging into Memsource and navigating to the top right corner.

Looking Ahead

So what’s in store for 2020? “We recognize the real value of machine translation, but also know that while MT output itself is improving, the supporting tech around MT has lagged behind. Our main focus for next year is to help more businesses make the most of machine translation and have planned some major updates to Memsource Translate to help achieve this goal,” said CEO and Founder of Memsource, David Canek.

In addition to this, there are many other new features and improvements in the pipeline to ensure your localization strategy is at its peak, including an exciting feature that Memsource CTO, Dalibor Frivaldsky, presented at the Process Innovation Challenge at LocWorld41 last month which automatically suggests a suitable linguist for a job. We will also be adding in-context preview support for other content management systems, jobs view for both Project Managers and Linguists, and more…so stay tuned.
